Livelihood

Gram Unnayan Sangstha (GUS) is committed to promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities and economic resilience among vulnerable populations across Bangladesh. Through a combination of emergency livelihood recovery, women’s empowerment initiatives, and targeted financial support mechanisms, GUS addresses both immediate income loss and long-term economic stability. Across its Livelihood-focused interventions more than 5,500 beneficiaries have been supported.

GUS has implemented integrated interventions in disaster-prone haor regions where communities frequently face income disruption due to floods and seasonal shocks. By combining emergency food assistance with livelihood recovery support, the organization has enabled affected households to restore income-generating activities while meeting their immediate basic needs. These efforts have helped vulnerable families rebuild their economic capacity, reduce dependency on aid, and strengthen resilience against recurring climate-related challenges.

Empowering women remains a central pillar of GUS’s livelihood strategy. Through targeted programs for vulnerable and distressed women, including those under the Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) initiative, GUS has facilitated skill development, capacity building, and access to income-generating opportunities.

These interventions have enabled women to achieve greater financial independence, contribute to household income, and enhance their social status and participation within their communities. By investing in women’s livelihoods, GUS contributes to long-term poverty reduction and inclusive development. GUS leverages social safety net mechanisms such as Zakat to provide targeted livelihood assistance to ultra-poor households, widows, and marginalized individuals. This support enables beneficiaries to initiate small-scale income-generating activities, diversify income sources, and improve household economic stability.

By linking immediate financial support with livelihood development, these initiatives ensure the effective and meaningful utilization of social funds while fostering self-reliance and sustainability.
