Food Security

Gram Unnayan Sangstha (GUS) has been consistently working to strengthen food security among vulnerable communities in disaster-prone and economically disadvantaged regions of Bangladesh. Through a combination of emergency response, seasonal assistance, and livelihood support initiatives, GUS addresses both immediate hunger needs and long-term resilience. Across its Food Security-focused interventions, a total of 48,235 beneficiaries have been supported.

GUS has played a critical role in responding to natural disasters, particularly in haor and flood-prone areas. During early flash floods in 2010 and subsequent flooding events, the organization provided emergency food assistance alongside WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) support. These interventions ensured access to safe drinking water, hygiene materials, and essential food supplies, reducing hunger risks and preventing waterborne diseases. In recent times, GUS continued its emergency response efforts by supporting flood-affected communities with food packages, non-food items, and hygiene kits, helping families maintain basic living conditions during crises and recover more quickly.

Recognizing that food insecurity is closely linked to income loss, GUS has implemented programs that integrate food assistance with livelihood recovery. The Emergency Food Security & Livelihood Support Program enabled vulnerable households to restore income-generating activities while meeting their immediate food and nutrition needs.

Additionally, the Zakat Fund Distribution Project provided targeted financial assistance that allowed beneficiaries not only to secure food but also to invest in small-scale livelihoods, promoting longer-term economic stability.

GUS also addresses food insecurity during culturally significant periods when vulnerable households face increased pressure to meet nutritional needs. During Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr, food packages and hot meals are distributed to ensure dignified fasting and adequate nutrition for Iftar and Suhoor. Similarly, during Eid-ul-Adha, Qurbani meat distribution programs enable low-income families to access nutritious protein and participate in important religious celebrations with dignity. These initiatives strengthen social inclusion, community solidarity, and well-being.

GUS’s Food Security initiatives demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting vulnerable populations from hunger while building their capacity to withstand future challenges. By combining emergency relief with sustainable support mechanisms, the organization continues to make a meaningful impact in improving food security and enhancing the resilience of communities across Bangladesh.
